New York City FC Logo: MLS team unveils badge finalists for fan voting, made the wrong choice? [PHOTOS]

New York City FC—MLS's 20th franchise—finally unveiled a pair of crests on Monday that will serve as the club's identity in 2014. Every nuance of the two finalists intentionally pay homage to the Big Apple while simultaneously keeping in order with the mothership known as Manchester City Football Club.

Fans will be allowed to vote and ultimately decide on the future direction of the new franchise. Voting will remain open through March 13th and can be done by visiting the club's official website.

The first of the two logos features a shield-like crest found in the official seal of New York City. The gold trimming is said to exemplify success, elegance and triumph. The exact tone of orange that can be found in the NYC flag is embedded in the monogram synonymous with other professional teams in the surrounding area.

The second crest—though carries similar features—pays homage to different aspects of New York. The circular shape evokes the old subway token commuters fondly remember, and the pentagon on both sides of the logo represent the five boroughs of NYC.

You'll be hard pressed, however, to find the deep connection New Yorkers are supposed to have with the primary colors of Manchester City.

Both designs were created by renowned designer Rafael Esquer.

According to the club's official website, Director of Football Operations Claudio Reyna believes New Yorkers will carry either logo as a badge of honor. "This badge is to be the symbol of our Club, a symbol of our players and we hope in time, a symbol of this City," Reyna said. "That is why we decided to give our fans the power to take part in such a fundamental way," he added.

"Thanks to the work of Rafael Esquer we feel that we have two designs that truly represent our Club and our City, and we're excited to see which badge they choose."

Before deciding on the works of Esquer, NYC FC launched a social media campaign, urging talented graphic designers to submit their best designs.
