Brett Favre Green Bay Packers feud: Packers to offer to retire Favre's jersey? [VIDEO]

As a much heartier Brett Favre makes his way through life, looking like Santa Claus on steroids, the Green Bay Packers are being asked to give the gift of giving to their prodigal son.

Lombardiave.com reported on a Green Bay Packers documentary now available online, "Last Day at Lambeau Field," which is said to take an anti-Favre slant because of the end of his tenure as Packers quarterback.

Lombardiave.com reported Patrick Hughes said the documentary left him conflicted about Favre's departure from the organization as he first went to the New York Jets and then to the rival Minnesota Vikings.

"Brett Favre is arguably the greatest player ever to wear the Green and Gold," Hughes writes. "He was largely responsible for resurrecting a franchise that was running on the fumes of Vince Lombardi's Glory Days for over 20 years.

"But the way he departed and ultimately continued his NFL career will never allow fans to hold him in the same regard as the other great players in Packers history. ... The rub with the Green Bay Packers v. Favre divorce is Brett Favre seemed hell bent on sticking it to the Packers. And that kind of left a bad taste in the mouths of the Packers faithful."

Favre has been away from football for more than three years. The Packers won Super Bowl XLV with Aaron Rogers, the man who replaced Favre at quarterback.

Hughes acknowledged the dilemma Packers fans face when it comes to Favre and the subject of retiring his No. 4 jersey in Green Bay.

"Embracing Favre and a return to Lambeau to have his number 4 retired stirs the emotions of Packers Nation. On one hand, during most of his career with the Green Bay Packers he brought fans immense joy. On the other hand, fans feel like the love Packers Nation showered upon him was taken for granted. Bringing him back into the family creates a situation where the fans, the people who loved him unconditionally, must forgive him for turning his back on them."

Hughes calls for the Packers to forgive and forget and offer to retire his number to allow him to return to his proper place in Packers lore.

Even if the Packers organization harbors some ill-will toward Favre, offering to retire his number puts the responsibility of burying the hatchet on Favre and makes the Packers look better in the court of public opinion.

Certainly, he did more good during his 16 years in Green Bay than the messy four of five years in the league, in which he hung retirement over the franchise's head and then had a less-than-amicable departure from the team.
