Former NBA and NC State Head Coach Sidney Lowe Facing Tax Evasion Charges

Utah Jazz assistant coach and former head coach of the North Carolina State Wolfpack Sidney Lowe was arrested Monday for not reporting his North Carolina state income taxes from 2009 through 2011, according to the Associated Press.

Lowe was coaching the Wolfpack at the time he failed to file his taxes, and was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond. According to the Associated Press article on Yahoo!.com Lowe's base salary with North Carolina State was $210,000, which shot up to $760,000 after radio and television commitments and could possibly have reached as high as $900,000.

Lowe was a guard for the Wolfpack from 1979-1983, averaging 8.7 points and nearly two steals per game. His best year was in the 1982-1983 season when he averaged 11.3 points per game as a senior on a team nicknamed the "Cardiac Pack" that won the 1983 national championship.

Lowe played six seasons in the NBA for the Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets and Minnesota Timberwolves, never making too much of an impact. As a pro, he averaged 2.9 points and 3.9 assists per game. Lowe took over as the head basketball coach at North Carolina State in 2006 and stayed there for five seasons, compiling an 86-78 record and topping out at number 21 in the Associated Press rankings during the 2007-2008 season. Under Lowe, the Wolfpack were 30 games under .500 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and went just 3-16 against Duke and the University of North Carolina. The Wolfpack reached the National Invitational Tournament twice with Lowe at the helm.

Lowe went on to be a head coach in the NBA for Minnesota from 1992 to 1994 and for the Grizzlies both in Vancouver and Memphis from 1999 to 2002. In Minnesota his record was a dreadful 33-102, and things didn't go much better with the Grizzlies, where he had back-to-back 23-59 seasons before being fired after an 0-8 start to the 2001-2002 season.
