Dallas police have released new information regarding the fatal car crash that claimed the life of Dallas Cowboys' defensive lineman Jerry Brown Jr. and landed teammate and fellow defensive lineman Josh Brent in jail for drunken driving. Police say that Brent was intoxicated and driving at least 110 miles per hour before wrecking the car, and could have been driving as fast as 134 miles per hour, according to NBC 5.
Brent flipped the car over after hitting a curb at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. His blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit and neither Brent nor Brown were wearing a seatbelt.
According to NBC 5, Brent and teammates were seen at Eddie V's in Dallas, and moved from there to Beamer's Nightclub. They did not leave the nightclub until 2:15 a.m. and a call was placed to 911 automatically from inside Brent's destroyed car at 2:19 a.m. Brent is expected to go on trial this summer and is facing intoxicated manslaughter charges. According to dwfdwi.com, the penalty for intoxicated manslaughter is 2-20 years imprisonment and a fine up to $10,000.
Brent was a seventh-round choice of the Dallas Cowboys in the 2010 Supplemental draft, after he was ruled academically ineligible to play his senior year at Illinois. He was the Cowboys first Supplemental pick since 1995. In 2009, Brent pled guilty to a DUI charge and was sentenced to two years probation, 60 days in jail, and 200 hours of community service.
Brent caused a stir during a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, when he was present on the Cowboys sideline during a tribute to Brown. Brent said he was invited by teammates to be on the sideline but left when he realized he was becoming a distraction. Cowboys executives said they were unaware that he would be with the team and eventually barred him from the sidelines for the rest of the season.
In 2012, Brent started five games for the Cowboys, and 13 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
