The opening pitching matchup will feature Masahiro Tanaka (1-0, 3.21 ERA) on the hill for the Yanks and Jason Hammel (2-0, 2.36 ERA) for the Cubbies.

Tanaka, the Yankees top free agent get this offseason, has been mostly impressive in his first two starts despite some hiccups with the long ball. Tanaka spoke about ironing out those kinks.

"If you look at the first two starts, the beginning of the game, I'm missing my spots and giving up runs," Tanaka said through an interpreter. "I need to make my adjustments, try not to do that. Try to keep the damage to a minimum -- or no damage at all -- at the beginning of the game."

"I pride myself on not giving in after giving up runs," Tanaka continued. "From the time when I was in Japan, I would always think that if I gave up a run, I would think to myself that I'm not going to give up any more runs."

Hammel is off to a great start as well, and talked about how excited he is to face the Yanks as a member of the Cubs. It's unlikely the mystique will faze him though after spending three years as a Devil Ray, and two more as an Oriole.

"They're a perennial powerhouse and find a way to win, and the organization is committed to their players. That's how they do it," Hammel said. "That being said, there's still a way to beat them. I've faced them many times and had some success."

In Game 2 of the day-night double header Michael Pineda will toe the rubber for the Bombers against Travis Wood (0-1, 2.92 ERA).
