The Sports World News NFL Mock Draft reaches version 6.0 as we dig into the last 20 days before the draft kicks off. This is part one covering teams 1-16.
Sports World News NFL Mock Draft 6.0 Part Two
1. Houston Texans: Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina
It looks like a foregone conclusion the Texans will be walking away from the draft with Clowney. The question the Texans have to answer next is what QB will they select.
2. St. Louis Rams (via Redskins): Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson
The Rams can do three things with this pick; trade, pick Watkins, or pick Khalil Mack and Watkins makes the most sense for an offense lacking weapons. Watkins becomes the best receiver on the team and can help Tavon Austin develop.
3. TRADE Minnesota Vikings (via Jaguars): Blake Bortles, QB, Central Florida
The Vikings take the QB race into their own hands and go get their guy. Bortles is the top-rated QB by many and will serve well with Adrian Peterson in his backfield. Vikings have to roll the dice.
4. Cleveland Browns: Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State
It’s never a reach if a team believes the player they are selecting is a franchise-changing player. Derek Carr has all the potential to be great and the Browns have rumored to love him since the beginning.
5. Oakland Raiders: Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo
Oakland can land their QB of the future later or even in the 2015 draft, but a player of Mack’s caliber is too good to pass up. The Raiders fixed their pass rushing woes in free agency, but the veterans they signed are all on short term deals.
6. Atlanta Falcons: Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M
The Falcons are in such a bad spot this year. They need pass rush help desperately, but the top two guys are gone at No. 6. The Falcons can attempt to make a move, but the QB hungry teams could be willing to offer more than the Falcons. Matthews fits the Falcons better than Robinson and will end up being better down the line anyway.
7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn
Tampa is the opposite of the Falcons in the sense they have too many options at No. 8 that they simply don’t want. They could go for WR or OT, but apparently aren’t in love with anyone but Bortles. The Bucs could try and trade back, but the No. 1 OT is available in Robinson
8. Jacksonville Jaguars (via Vikings): Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M
Justin Blackmon is suspended indefinitely and is one more incident away from being out of football. The Jaguars can add their new No. 1 receiver or add a great No. 2 if Blackmon pans out. Now the Jaguars need to find someone to throw to them.
9. Buffalo Bills: Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina
I am notoriously high on Ebron and some of my peers agree he could go at No. 9. The Bills have little to nothing at TE and Ebron could be the safety blanket EJ Manuel needs. Ebron has the potential to be the next great thing at TE.
10. TRADE Dallas Cowboys (via Lions): Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh
Dallas takes their DT situation into their own hands and grab the top prosepct in Donald. Donald is a freak athlete and makes the Cowboys better instantly. A team no one is talking about always makes a move on draft day that comes out of left field. The Lions missed out on both WRs so they can move back.
11. TRADE San Francisco 49ers (via Titans): Anthony Barr, OLB, UCLA
The rumors are that the 49ers are looking to move up and grab a possible Aldon Smith replacement. The Titans want no glaring need for a top 15 talent and would rather stockpile picks. Barr is cooling on scouts, but the 49ers have a habit of developing defensive talent.
12. New York Giants: Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
Lewan is the third best of the top OTs, but he would step in immediately and start for the Giants. Lewan has off the field issues that will have to be addressed, but the Giants have a strong core of leadership.
13. St. Louis Rams: Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama
Many reports claim the Rams won’t let Clinton-Dix get past them and Todd McShay, Mel Kiper Jr. both have him as high as No. 10. Clinton-Dix is a talent that needs some coaching and disappears at times, but he is better than everything the Rams have, Clinton-Dix can learn by experience.
14. Chicago Bears: Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
Donald is gone and that hurts the Bears, but they grab the top CB in the draft and can start developing him immediately. He wont start right away in Chicago, but will work his way in by season's end.
15. Pittsburgh Steelers: Odell Beckham Jr., WR, LSU
I haven’t been a big supporter of the Steelers taking an offensive player, but it is making more and more sense as time goes on. Pittsburgh has many needs on both sides of the ball, but getting an offensive playmaker like Beckham can mask some of those issues. The Steelers can grab defensive players the rest of the draft.
16. Detroit Lions (via Cowboys): Calvin Pryor, S, Louisville
The Lions traded back and can address their secondary that has needed fresh new talent for as long as I can remember. Pryor is the No. 1 safety to some scouts and the Lions can use his services after losing Louis Delmas. The Lions can get a receiver later in one of the deeper WR drafts in memory.
