Federer joins New York Mets infielder Daniel Murphy as players who made the decision to miss some playing time to see the birth of their child with the people in their lives. Federer’s situation is a little more serious as he is missing the French Open, while Murphy missed a few games of his 162 game season.

Federer’s official statement on the matter:

“So we’re just waiting. It’s a priority for me trying to be there, trying to support my wife,” Federer said Wednesday at the Monte Carlo Masters. “I’ve played enough tennis matches. Missing a tournament or missing a match wouldn’t change anything for me…

At the moment we hope it’s not going to be that way… If it is, that’s what it is, you know.”

In an unrelated coincidence, the French is historically Federer’s worst tournament and he doesn’t play nearly as well on clay as other surfaces. Congratulations Roger Federer on the birth of your child and we look forward to seeing you back on the court soon.
