Minnesota Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman won't be returning to the bench next season paving the way for the possibility of Flip Saunders getting his old post back.
Sid Hartman of the Star Tribune is reporting that Adelman has coached his last game for the Wolves, and the team will be making an announcement about this development pretty soon.
Adelman has been dealing with family health issues in the past few years, particularly with his wife Mary Kay in sickbay.
Owner Glen Taylor told Hartman recently: "I think that a lot of it has to do with [Adelman's] family and what he thinks is best for his family. I know he loves coaching, so that's not the issue. I just think he has to determine what's in the best interest for his family right now."
The next question would be who will replace Adelman. While two college coaches have been rumored to replace him-Tom Izzo of Michigan State and Fred Hoiberg of Iowa State, Hartman believes that the two won't likely take a chance given their 'popularity' and 'security' at their respective colleges.
Word from Minnesota is that current president of basketball operations Flip Saunders would like to get his former job back, but he has to convince Taylor that he could do both jobs simultaneously.
The Wolves finished the season with a 31-51 record, missing the playoffs for the 10th straight year. While the team has an All-Star in Kevin Love and young studs in Ricky Rubio and Nikola Pekovic, the Wolves have been one of the disappointments of the regular season after coming in with playoff hopes.
