The injury bug that keeps biting the New York Yankees won't even limit itself to the field. General manager Brian Cashman is the latest Yankee to hit the disabled list after breaking his ankle during a parachute jump with the U.S. Army's Golden Knights, according to reports.
Cashman made one jump successfully and broke his ankle after doing a second one. Cashman told the New York Daily News that he heard a pop in his ankle. The jumps were a part of the Wounded Warrior Project. The goal of the Wounded Warrior Project, according to its website, is to raise public awareness and aid for soldiers who have been seriously injured.
Before the first jump Cashman told the Daily News, "It's an opportunity to do something that a lot of people don't do or will ever do, so that's awesome. It's called living. But it's not like on my list of something I've always wanted to do. I'm kind of excited for the opportunity to do it but at the same time, big-time nervous about doing it." Last year, Cashman rappelled down the 22-story Landmark Building in Connecticut.
This offseason has been a hectic one for Cashman, who has dealt with criticism for a lack of big-name signings, injuries to Alex Rodriguez, Curtis Granderson and Phil Hughes, and more performance-enhancing drug rumors surrounding Rodriguez.
Cashman has also butted heads a bit with legendary Yankees catcher Yogi Berra, who took to the media to say utility infielder Eduardo Nunez needs to get 500 at-bats this season. Nunez, a career .272 hitter, was demoted last season due to his struggles in the field. With an aging roster, it is unlikely that Nunez could serve as a regular designated hitter, and his 26 errors over the last two seasons make him difficult to trust. Recently, Cashman has said that Nunez' bat is not up to par with the expected production of a corner outfielder or third baseman, and that the organization views Nunez as a shortstop. With Derek Jeter still entrenched at the position, Berra likely won't get his wish of 500 at-bats for Nunez.
