White Sox: Sale Agrees To 5-Year Deal

The Chicago White Sox and left-hander Chris Sale have agreed to a five-year, $32.5 million contract extension including two options that could make the deal worth a total of $60 million, the team announced Thursday. Sale will receive a guaranteed $32.5 million over the first five-years of the deal, with club options for the next two seasons. The White Sox hold options for 2018 at $12.5 million and 2019 at $13.5 million. If Chicago declines either option, Sale will receive a $1 million buyout.

Sale's salary will increase each season, starting at $850,000 in 2013, $3.5 million in 2014, $6.0 million in 2015, $9.15 million in 2016, and $12 million in 2017. The 23-year-old went 17-8 in 2012, making the AL all-star team and posting a 3.05 ERA during his first season as a starter.

"A pitcher, regardless of his mechanics, there is a risk involved and a concern of potential breakdown," White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said. "We are confident in Chris' durability and obviously very optimistic about his future."
