Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin is pining for a contract extension and is rumored to be considering a holdout, while reports have surfaced that Minnesota could be preparing an offer for Mike Wallace to be his eventual replacement.
Harvin is set to become an unrestricted free agent next year, and could be seeking a new deal approaching Calvin Johnson's eight-year, $32 million. Sources say Harvin considers himself to be a "special player." The Vikings would likely prefer to pay Harvin in the Vincent Jackson range-Jackson received a five-year, $55 million contract from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jackson had held out into the regular season after the Chargers placed the franchise tag on him when he wanted a long-term deal.
Harvin is 24 years old, but has some big question marks despite his explosiveness and versatility. He has never played a full NFL season, and twice missed half a season. He has never reached 1,000 yards receiving, although he came close with 967 in 2011. He also has suffered from recurring migraine problems which have knocked him out of several games in his career.
Mike Wallace is two years older than Harvin, and does not offer the multi-purpose ability. However, Wallace has only missed one game in his NFL career, topped 1,100 yards receiving twice, and in 2010 averaged 21 yards per catch. Each player has logged four seasons in the league, and Wallace has 32 touchdowns to Harvin's 20.
It is possible that the Vikings could attempt to sign both and surround their sometimes-shaky quarterback Christian Ponder with elite weapons, but it is more likely that they will try to flip Harvin if Wallace is brought into the fold.
Further complicating matters, at times Harvin has been a headache as opposed to simply suffering through them. Reports said Harvin engaged in a shouting match with head coach Leslie Frazier and had a history of arguments with coaches as a Florida Gator.
