Spurs coach Gregg Popovich gives heart-warming interview with Craig Sager's son
Multiple media outlets reported Friday that TNT broadcaster Craig Sager was to be released Friday from the hospital after three weeks of chemotherapy treatment for leukemia.
The reports were based upon tweets made by Sager's son, Craig Jr.
Sager chronicled his battle from the hospital against leukemia for Bleacher Report and talked about the outpouring of support he received since his announcement just prior to the start of this year's NBA playoffs.
Craig Sager keeps his sense of humor during chemotherapy
Charles Barkley has visited Sager in the hospital, Bleacher Report said, and the Brooklyn Nets' Kevin Garnett surprised him with a gift.
Sager wrote for Bleacher Report:
"Tuesday was my best day since I started treatment. I turned the corner, as I'm now building my own white blood corpuscles. All the doctors say I'm doing remarkable, doing the best I can possibly do, no bad reactions. I haven't had any aftereffects from the chemo, and I'm staying healthy. The doctors said that being in good shape is a big factor, and I'm not on any oxygen, all my organs are good, my heart is perfect. So they're very pleased with what's going on.
"The best therapy for me has been the playoffs; thank God for that. They do chemo right there at your bedside, so right from day one I was watching the games."
The elder Sager talked about ESPN commentators Mike Breen and Jeff Van Gundy expressing their best wishes during the first game of the playoffs between the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers. On Easter, his son's interview with San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich started to bring tears to his eyes. He said TNT's Inside the NBA anchor Ernie Johnson, who had his own brush with chemotherapy in 2006, has visited on multiple occasions, and Los Angeles Clippers coach Doc Rivers, who has been a little preoccupied with the Donald Sterling ban, still has taken time out to talk to Sager on the phone on multiple occasions. Of course, the support for Sager hasn't been just from the NBA.
