The Cleveland Cavaliers will name David Griffin as its general manager, who has been the interim GM of the team since team owner Dan Gilbert fired Chris Grant on February 6.
According to a source close to The Plain Dealer, the Cavs will settle on Griffin after interviewing four to five candidates. However, there is still no word on whether the Cavs will retain the services of head coach Mike Brown.
The Cavs were one of the most disappointing teams in the 2013-14 regular season after a massive pre-season build-up that made them appear like a playoff-bound team. While the team did remain in the playoff hunt until the last week of the season, the Cavaliers dealt with numerous internal squabbles. Still, Grant's entry helped give some sort of stability to the franchise with the team recording a 17-16 record the rest of the way.
One of the mid-season moves of the 44-year old Griffin was acquiring center Spencer Hawes from the Philadelphia 76ers at the trading deadline. Still it remains to be seen whether Hawes and another free agent, Luol Deng, will re-sign with the team. Deng, the former All-Star back in his Chicago days, has been reported to be disgruntled at the immaturity of some of his teammates.
Griffin has a lot of work this offseason, most notably the need to re-sign emerging star Kyrie Irving to a maximum contract as well as a contract extension to forward Tristan Thompson. Of course, the fate of coach Brown will also be one of the questions that Griffin has to answer this summer.
