So it may come with a touch of irony that Scott will replace Woods atop the rankings in an event he's not playing.
Yahoo Sports! posted a story from AFP stating that Scott, the Aussie, will become No. 1 in next week's rankings, replacing Woods in his second stint as the world's best golfer. Woods has been No. 1 for a combined 683 weeks.
Woods' last stay atop the poll began March 25, 2013. He has been sidelined since before the Masters as he recovers from surgery to repair a pinched nerve in his back. His status for the U.S. Open in June is doubtful.

Scott, meanwhile, becomes the first Australian player since Greg Norman to claim the No. 1 spot. Normal was the world's best golfer for 331 weeks spanning the 1980s and 1990s, AFP reported.
Scott won his first Major event at the 2013 Masters.
According to AFP, Scott has had four chances the last two months to overtake Woods. The latest came at The Players Championship last week, in which Scott needed to finish 16th or higher to claim the No. 1 ranking.
Instead, Scott finished 38th.
With both players out of this week's event, the U.S. PGA Byron Nelson Championship, Scott still will move past Woods because he will lose fewer points in the two-year ranking system.
"I think it's a nice feather in the cap, probably," Scott said last week, as reported by AFP. "If I was never world number one when I'm this close, I would be disappointed.
"But I would also much rather win the US Open and not be number one at all this year. That's what it comes down to."
Scott is the 17th player all-time to hold the No. 1 mark and the fourth to earn the No. 1 ranking without having played in the latest weekly event.
