Canelo Alvarez vs. Manny Pacquiao: Pacman May Leave Bob Arum, Work Out Super Fight With Floyd Mayweather Jr.? [VIDEO]

The sport of boxing has been buzzing for the past few weeks about the possibility of Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions working together again to open more doors for better fights. The impetus for the talks was a possible Canelo Alvarez vs. Manny Pacquiao pairing.

That fight could potentially be in jeopardy now, though, amid reports Pacquiao is considering leaving Bob Arum entirely to promote himself. Pacman's last two fights, victories over Brandon Rios and Timothy Bradley, have been underwhelming by his superstar standards and he could be angling to finally make a super fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. happen.

"Bob has been good to us and we have nothing negative to say about Top Rank but we have to decide what's best for Manny at this stage of his career," Michael Koncz, Pacquiao's financial adviser stated. "If we don't' extend our contract with Top Rank, we may go out on our own and promoter ourselves."

Another possibility raised is a partnership with rapper-turned-business mogul 50 Cent and SMS Promotions. While it seems far-fetched, Koncz wouldn't rule it out. "Maybe we'll have a partner and promote ourselves," he said.

For a fight with Mayweather to happen, it's painfully clear there will need to be a separation from Arum. Mayweather has been clear on a number of occasions that he will never work with Arum, and that Manny no longer has the pay-per-view clout to put himself on even footing with "Money" in terms of their gates.

Part of the reason for his declining numbers might be a power outage. Pacman hasn't scored a knockout since a TKO win over Miguel Cotto in 2009, and he has also lost twice since then. If his power has receded, it makes sense for him then to latch on to the Mayweather gravy train and finally give fans the fight they've clamored for for years.
