Rory McIlroy has had himself some tough times on the golf course, but now he faces some off-the- course struggles as he has called off his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.
The couple had sent out wedding invitations just days earlier when McIlroy admitted that he believed the relationship was moving too fast for him called it off entirely. The couple was scheduled to marry in Sydney, Australia on New Year's Day. In a statement, McIlroy spoke of the difficult separation and also said he would not discuss the matter any further.
“There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people,” McIlroy said. “The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.
“I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting.”
Friends of the couple say that Wozniacki is in rough shape after the break up and that things hit a critical point when she posted a picture of McIlroy sleeping to her Twitter account. The Irish Independent was the first to cover the reasons behind the breakup.
"Friends say a photograph posted by Caroline on Twitter, which showed her boyfriend in a deep sleep, was one of the final straws for the number-one golfer."
"'There were a lot of tears. She still has her profile picture on her social-networking site set as the two of them in happier times, but I can tell you the pair are no longer an item."

McIlroy is expected to be appear at a media conference for the BMW PGA Championship Wednesday, but as he has said is not expected to speak about his relationship.
