The Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA lottery on Tuesday night for the second time in as many years. Some people are displeased with the outcome though-at the front of that line is ESPN personality Bill Simmons.
On NBA Countdown following Cleveland's big get, "The Sports Guy" launched into a tirade about the injustice of the Cavaliers' fortune. "We need new rules," Simmons cried.
"This is the most incompetent franchise of the past four years. They signed Mike Brown to a five-year deal and fired him after one. They made all these mistakes, screwed up some of their other picks and then they get rewarded again."
The most egregious of Cleveland's errors was last year's No. 1 pick of Anthony Bennett out of UNLV. They passed on the injured consensus choice, Nerlens Noel out of Kentucky, as well as Indiana guard Victor Oladipo. Bennett managed to see the floor for just 12.8 minutes per game, and averaged 4.2 points and three rebounds while shooting a paltry 35 percent from the floor.
Cleveland's lottery win is a boon for NBA conspiracy theorists who believe the NBA is trying to atone for LeBron James' painful, public departure in 2010. While Simmons didn't go so far as to say the Association rigged the proceedings, he does believe other forces were at work.
"I just think, enough. We're sorry LeBron left Cleveland but enough with the karma for Cleveland. I wish anybody else had won," Simmons said.
In addition to having the top pick in 2013, and selecting Kyrie Irving No. 1 overall in 2011, the Cavaliers had the No. 4 pick in 2012 which they spent on Dion Waiters. Waiters was not a starter for the Syracuse Orange in college, and has reportedly clashed multiple times with Irving.
