Tonight at 8:15 p.m. ET, the Arizona Diamondbacks and St. Louis Cardinals take the field at Busch Stadium for the second contest of a three-game set live from St. Louis. Arizona looks to get back into the series after losing Game 1 in a 5-0 loss on Tuesday as it continues its six-game road trip while St. Louis continues its 10-game road trip that it is currently 5-2 on.
Brandon McCarthy (1-6, 5.01 ERA) takes the ball for the Diamondbacks while the Cardinals counter with Michael Wacha (3-3, 2.82 ERA).
Wacha is coming off of a win against the Chicago Cubs, but his record remains at .500 due mostly to a lack of run support.
"I look at my outings not really in the win-loss category," Wacha, who ranks fourth in the National League with 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings, said via MLB.com. "Definitely, you want to see more wins, because that means your team is winning. But it's kind of on you and how you feel you pitched that day."
The Diamondbacks had some rough starting pitching through the beginning of the season, but the rotation seems to be getting back on the right track.
"It was rough the first few weeks where we just felt like the five outcasts and it didn't matter who was starting, it was like we were the guys sitting outside wasting everybody's time," McCarthy told MLB.com. "At least now, we are contributing again and having some better performances and taking us deeper into games."
Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday has reached safely in all 19 home games thus far this season and will look to continue that streak tonight. Holliday is hitting .272 with two homers and a team-best 25 RBIs this season.
St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina ranks fifth in the National League with a .331 average and has launched four homers while adding 22 RBIs. Infielder Matt Carpenter is fifth in the NL with 28 walks while shortstop Jhonny Peralta leads the Cards with nine long-balls this season.
Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt leads the NL in hits (60) and doubles (19) and ranks second in runs (35) and total bases (106). Goldschmidt leads the Diamondbacks with a .317 average, nine homers and 32 RBIs.
