Today at 12:40 p.m. ET, the Philadelphia Phillies (20-23) and Miami Marlins (24-23) take the field at Marlins Park in Miami for the third and final contest of a three-game set. This is the rubber match of the series after the Phillies won the series opener on Tuesday 6-5 and the Marlins evened things up with a 14-5 triumph on Tuesday. Philadelphia finishes up its short three-game road trip while Miami continues its six-game homestand.
Cole Hamels (1-2, 4.40 ERA) takes the ball for the Phillies while Henderson Alvarez (2-3, 3.62 ERA) mans the mound for the Marlins.
With Miami ace Jose Fernandez sidelined, pitchers like Alvarez need to step up, according to manager Mike Redmond.
"It really is a time where we've got a lot of young guys, and they've all gotten quite a few starts in the big leagues now," Redmond said via MLB.com. "Now we're looking for guys to take that next step and start winning ballgames, and pitching deeper into games."
Alvarez has allowed 10 runs in 10 innings over his last two starts, but shutout the New York Mets in his last home start on May 6. Hamels searches for career-win No. 101 when he opposes Alvarez.
The Marlins are an MLB-best 18-6 at home and a league-worst 6-17 away from Marlins Park.
Miami outfielder Giancarlo Stanton ranks first in the MLB with 44 RBIs and third in total bases with 104. Stanton is tied for second in the National League in homers (12), fourth in OPS (.988) and fifth in slugging percentage (.588).
Marlins outfielder Christian Yelich is tied for the MLB league with four triples and ranks fourth in the NL with 34 runs.
Philadelphia second baseman Chase Utley ranks tied for second in the MLB with 18 doubles while outfielder Ben Revere is tied for fourth in the NL with 12 stolen bases.
The Phillies and Marlins close out their series with the rubber match this afternoon at Marlins Park in Miami.
