The Arizona Cardinals have reached an agreement with former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The one-year deal reunites Mendehnall with Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, who once served as the Steelers offensive coordinator.
Mendenhall was the Steelers leader in rushing yards for three straight seasons before a disappointing 2012 season which included a one game suspension and multiple injuries. Mendenhall was suspended in December for not attending a loss to the Chargers after finding out he would be inactive for the game. He was also inactive for two games after fumbling twice on four carries against the Browns last season.
Mendenhall suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in Week 17 of the 2011 season and returned on Oct. 4 of the 2012 season. Four days later, Mendenhall strained his right Achilles.
In 57 games, the 25-year-old Mendenhall has a total of 3,549 yards and 29 touchdowns. Upon arriving in Arizona, he will replace the recently released Beanie Wells.
