John McEnroe To Coach Andy Murray? Ivan Lendl Successor Named After French Open [VIDEO]

Andy Murray has selected a replacement for coach Ivan Lendl. His task now is to keep under wraps who that coach is until after the French Open.

Early exits allow Andy Murray to consider John McEnroe as a coach

BBC Sport reported Friday that the No. 8 player in the world has not offered the job formally and wants to direct his focus on the French Open, which begins Sunday at Roland Garros, which is why he wants to wait until after the tournament to make the announcement.

Earlier this month, American tennis great and current commentator John McEnroe expressed an interest in working with Murray. Murray had said that he had a list of seven or eight candidates he was considering.

But the 27-year-old Murray believes that an arrangement is in place with a mutual interest to work together.

Andy Murray asks people on Twitter whom he should consider as his next head coach

"I have an idea of exactly what I want," Murray told BBC Sport. "I've thought about it a lot, I've spoken to them and I'll see. It's not like you chat to the person and the next day it's done.

"You have to get a contract in place and there's always a few little complications in that respect, but as long as the desire from both people is to work together then hopefully it can happen fairly soon," he added.

Murray has been without an instructor since mid-March when Ivan Lendl, who guided Murray to the 2012 U.S. Open and 2013 Wimbledon championships, broke off their working relationship.

Murray, who reached as high as No. 2 in the world, has struggled since undergoing shoulder surgery last fall. The farthest he has advanced in a tournament in 2014 was the semifinals of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco, Mexico in February.

He lost in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open to Roger Federer.

Murray has a 21-9 record in 2014 and won't be one of the French Open favorites, but he is obviously hoping that the pairing with the new coach creates some instant chemistry when Murray opens defensive of his Wimbledon crown in June.
