Tonight at 8:10 p.m. ET, the Kansas City Royals (26-30) and St. Louis Cardinals (30-27) take the field at Busch Stadium for the first game of a four-game home and home series live from St. Louis. Kansas City continues its six-game road trip that it is currently 2-2 on while St. Louis wraps up its nine-game homestand that has seen it go 2-5 on thus far.
Danny Duffy (2-5, 3.57 ERA) toes the rubber for the Royals while Shelby Miller (6-4, 3.94 ERA) mans the mound for the Cardinals.
These teams engage in a four-game series with two games at Busch Stadium before the series shifts down I-70 to Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.
Duffy takes the mound after he had what was described as a "dead arm" against the Houston Astros, where the team lost 9-3 and he only lasted four innings.
"My velocity dipped pretty drastically compared to the prior start, but I think it's just something that all pitchers go through every now and then," Duffy said per MLB.com. "The good ones pitch through it and get outs anyway, and I didn't."
Miller allowed a season-high seven runs against the New York Yankees his last time out and will look to shake that off tonight on the hill.
"I really don't have a good explanation for it. I don't think he does either," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said of Miller's last outing via MLB.com. "It's just one of those nights where everything seemed to be right where they were putting the bat. Not a great explanation."
Kansas City first baseman Eric Hosmer leads the American League with 40 doubles this season and is hitting .271 with a homer and 23 RBIs. The Royals lead the MLB with 48 stolen bases, and shortstop Alcides Escobar has accounted for 15 of them, which ranks him tied for third in the AL.
He may have a tough time stealing on St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina, who has thrown out 48% of would-be base stealers this season. Molina has also been swinging a good bat on the 2014 campaign, as he enters play hitting .309 with five homers and 23 RBIs.
Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter has a 14-game hitting streak going and is fifth in the National League with 66 hits while hitting .291 with one homer and 18 RBIs.
