Gennady Golovkin, boxing's premier knockout artist today, has moved on from broken negotiations with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and will now headline a July 26 card against Daniel Geale at the world's most famous arena, Madison Square Garden.
Golovkin will be fighting for the first time in the main theater, as HBO appears to be turning to him as their brightest attraction not named Manny Pacquiao. "I'm happy to be fighting at Madison Square Garden once again. Fighting in front of the great fans in New York City for the third time is an honor for me and I will train hard to defend my titles in style by giving the fans an exciting show," Golovkin said.
"Daniel Geale has a lot of world championship experience, is a big international name and I look forward to this challenge."
Geale is the most accomplished fighter yet to step in the ring with Golovkin, who is 29-0-0 with 26 knockouts. He rebounded from a split decision loss to Darren Barker in July 2013 by defeating Garth Wood by RTD this past February.
At 33 years old he's trying to prove he can stand up to the boogeyman. "I'm pleased to be making my way back to HBO against Gennady Golovkin, a fighter who everyone thinks is invincible," Geale said.
"A victory will get me back to where I want to be. The people of Australia believe in me and that's what drives me, my countrymen. I want to show them they have a great champion. On July 26th the world will see me back on top."
Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler said that Golovkin doesn't necessarily aim to stop every opponent-his power just can't be contained. "Gennady doesn't go looking for knockouts but everyone knows the kind of knockouts he's scored. And Geale has never been stopped before," Loeffler said.
"Gennady was the first to stop Lujuan Simon, (Nobuhiro) Ishida and (Osumanu) Adama, but Geale clearly is on another level. It's been hard to get the best middleweights to fight Gennady but Geale stepped up to the challenge."
