The Cleveland Cavaliers are becoming one of the more hectic teams in the NBA due the amount of head scratching moves they have made in the past. Contrary to earlier reports, the Cavs will offer All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving a max contract, but will not rule out trading him after.
According to Terry Pluto of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, Cleveland is set to offer Irving a max contract that rivals the type of deal that the Washington Wizards gave John Wall.
My sources tell me that the Cavs have had no doubts about offering Irving the 5-year deal, and will do so. Once July 1 arrives -- the first date that an extension can be offered -- the Cavs will set up a meeting with Irving. They will present their All-Star guard with a contract extension, a 5-year deal in the $90 million range (or whatever is the maximum number).
The issue the Cavaliers face after they give Irving all this money is that they basically have declared him the cornerstone of the franchise. Irving has had question marks in his game, like his leadership and defense, that has made the Cleveland organization a little uneasy.
Their have been reports that the Cavaliers have received phone calls from teams interested the Cleveland point guard and could be inclined to trade him if the offer was appealing. Teams like the Lakers have shown interest in Irving for years now and could be inclined to pursue him the Cavaliers look to move him.
The Cavaliers hope that by offering the max contract on the first possible day (June 1) that he will take the deal as a sign of good faith. It is unknown what Irving’s stance is on his status in Cleveland, but it is more than likely there will be other teams that will offer a max contract of their own if were to pursue them.
