The 2014 World Cup now has its first hat trick as Thomas Müller and Germany rolled past Portugal 4-0 in the first match of Group G. The German’s scored on a 12th minute penalty kick and didn't look back as they send a short handed Portugal to the bottom of the group.
Müller was the story of the match for more than his scoring, as he was also involved in the incident that left Portugal’s Pepe with a red card. Pepe headbutted Müller during a play on the ball after Müller had already scored twice and once he left Portugal shorthanded the Germans took full advantage.
Müller scored in the 12th minute on a penalty kick, the 45th +1’ minute and finally in the 78th minute to top off the first World Cup hat trick since Argentina’s Gonzalo Higuaín had one in 2010. Müller’s becomes the 49th player to have a hat trick in World Cup play and the fourth since the 2002.
Thomas Müller and Germany have sent a message throughout the World Cup that they will be a force to be reckoned with and are the cream of the crop in Group G.
As a result of his red card, Pepe will not be active when Portugal playes the United States on June 22 while Germany's next game is against Ghana on June 21.
