Former NFL running back Rodney Thomas died Saturday in Groveton, Texas, the Bryan-College Eagle reported. Thomas was 41 years old.

The cause of death is not yet known.

Thomas played for the Houston Oilers, who drafted him 1995 in the third round, Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons during a seven-year professional career.

He had 1,973, 631 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns in his career. Thomas played collegiately at Texas A&M from 1991-1994 - rushing for 3,014 total yards and scoring 41 touchdowns.

"I was shocked and saddened by the news of the passing of Rodney Thomas," former A&M coach R.C. Slocum said in a statement. "He was a great football player, but more importantly, he was one of the finest young men that I have ever met.

"He was so kind, considerate and unselfish. He impacted all that met him in a positive way. Our prayers go out to his family and friends. Aggie-land lost one of its brightest stars today."
