Today at 1:05 p.m. ET, the Tampa Bay Rays (32-48) and Baltimore Orioles (41-36) take the field for a day-night double header live from Camden Yards in Baltimore. The games can be live streamed here. Tampa Bay fans can hear all of the action on WDAE 680 while Baltimore fans can do the same on 1090 WBAL.
These teams take the field this afternoon then again at 7:05 p.m. ET for the twin bill as they open up a four-game set with the matinee game making up for an April 15 rainout.
Alex Colome (0-0 4.50 ERA) takes the ball for Tampa Bay in the opening game while Baltimore counters with 2012 first-round pick Kevin Gausman, who is 3-1 with a 2.74 ERA. Jake Odorizzi (3-7, 4.29 ERA) will man the mound for the Rays in the second game while the Orioles will hand the ball to Chris Tillman (6-4, 4.25 ERA).
Tampa Bay will look to improve on its 13-23 road record after going 5-5 on a 10-game homestand. The Rays enter play with the worst record in baseball and are 12.5 games behind the American League East-leading Toronto Blue Jays.
Baltimore continues an 11-game homestand after taking two of three from the Chicago White Sox to open it up. The Orioles are just two games behind the Blue Jays in the AL East. Baltimore took two of three from Tampa Bay from June 16-18 and has won seven of eight meetings with them this season.
Rays manager Joe Maddon is not a fan of the day-night double header format in the MLB.
"Love them," Maddon told MLB.com sarcastically about split doubleheaders. "It's a great concept. Have a group get there at 10 o'clock in the morning and finish at 11 o'clock at night. And then play a 4 o'clock game [Saturday]. That's just how baseball was meant to be played."
Orioles manager Buck Showalter has nothing but praise for Gausman, his Game 1 starter.
"Obviously, Kevin's pitching real well, and he'll continue to get that opportunity as long as he's pitching well," Showalter said via MLB.com.
Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado hopes to be available Friday after the appeal of his five-game suspension for his role in a benches clearing incident against the Oakland Athletics on June 8 occurred Wednesday. Machado is hitting just .236 with four homers and 12 RBI this season.
Orioles outfielder Nelson Cruz leads the MLB with 24 homers and is second in the AL in RBI (64), third in total bases (171) and fifth in slugging percentage (.590) and OPS (.950). Outfielders Nick Markakis (96) and Adam Jones (95) rank third and fourth respectively in hits in the AL.
Rays third baseman Evan Longoria leads the team with 10 homers while first baseman James Loney paces the team with a .289 batting average and 38 RBI.
