A late match-winner from Mario Gotze was all that was needed for the Germans capture their 1-0 victory. A myriad of missed opportunities ultimately sealed the fate of the Argentines. With the victory, Germany now becomes just the third nation to win at least four World Cups (Italy, Brazil).
Key Moment: The meandering off his line from Manuel Neuer nearly cost him. The German keeper challenged an aerial ball just inside the area in the second half. While he did punch it clear, the 28-year-old also made vicious contact with Argentina’s Gonzalo Higuain. The tenaciousness of his challenge is what warranted a penalty. The official, however, had other plans.
Man of the Match: Argentine attack after Argentine attack was thwarted by Germany’s Jerome Boateng. Though, to be honest, Rodrigo Palacio was partially responsible for that too. Boateng finished the match with nine clearances, three interceptions and six tackles.
Lesson Learned: Carlos Tevez was missed. The 30-year-old striker was left off the 23-man roster and hasn’t featured for Argentina since 2011. Carrying fine club form, his 19 league goals would’ve been a much-welcomed addition in Rio de Janeiro. Instead, the hopes of nation rested on Palacio. Great decision, Alejandro Sabella.
