Only weeks ago Rory McIlroy broke off his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki and now fellow tennis star Maria Kirilenko has called off her engagement to Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin.
Martin Brodeur Willing to Wait Until Midseason to Sign
The Russian tennis player and three-time NHL MVP are calling it quits after being together since 2011 and have been engaged since 2012. When asked about the split, Kirilenko said that there were “many of reasons” behind her decision and said that she will always respect Ovechkin.
“I have decided to terminate the engagement,” she said. ” There are many reasons, but I do not want to go into details. I’ll say one thing: our relationship completed, but I respect Sasha as a person and athlete and I sincerely wish him continued athletic success. … At this moment, I’m concentrating on getting prepared for the nearest tournament. And I’m hoping that soon I’ll make my fans happy with news not only about my personal life, but also about my sports achievement.”

Ovechkin faced questions about his relationship when he didn't accompany his fiancee to Wimbledon a few weeks ago. Ovechkin has been seen hanging out with KHL player Ruben Begunts and Brooklyn Nets forward Andrei Kirilenko since the breakup and hasn't commented on the split.
