Having seen Diego Costa transfer to English outfit Chelsea for £32 million, Atletico Madrid enter the summer transfer window in desperate need of reinforcements. According to ESPN's Jorge Ramos (via Marca), Diego Simeone has urged the club's director of football, Jose Luis Perez Caminero, to bring in a strike partner for Mario Mandzukic.
Per Ramos, that partner is Manchester United's Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez.
"It's not a done deal," he stated. "But there's a strong chance of him ending up at Atlético de Madrid."
At 26, Hernandez's future has regressed at Old Trafford, seeing him out of favor with newly appointed manager Louis Van Gaal. The Mexican international was even left off the club's initial U.S. summer tour roster. He would later be asked to join his teammates for a friendly in Los Angeles, but didn't feature in United's 7-0 drumming of the Galaxy.
Should Hernandez fail to earn minutes under van Gaal, it won't be for a lack of opportunities. According to the Dutchman, the 26-year-old will have his chance to perform to his liking. "We have to see," van Gaal said (via Manchester Evening News). "I have to see how he performs, in the way I want. Now I can only see what he has showed under the guidance of another trainer-coach."
"He shall come, I will meet him and we will train," he added. "After that, he shall perform in a match and then after that I can answer."
