Vincenzo Nibali of team Astana has a strangle hold on the competition after 19 stages and the championship is in his sight. Nibali leads the pack by over seven minutes and with only two stages remaining, this one could be all over. Thibaut Pinot of FDJ and Jean Christophe Peraud of Ag2R sit in second and third, respectively.
Stage 20 is this years edition of the tour’s one and only time trial stage and it comes on the penultimate stage. This is the final chance for racers to make a run at the yellow jersey, but it could already be too late with Nibali’s incredible lead. According to Velo News, “Tour director Christian Prudhomme said organizers deliberately left this stage until late in the race, with the hope of encouraging the climbers to fight right to the end.”
Nibali has to stay the course for only two more stages before he can call himself champion.
