Geno Smith Believes He'll Be a Top Five Quarterback [VIDEO]

Reacting to a recent survey that showed him to be the worst starting quarterback in the NFL, Geno Smith of the New York Jets says he will be in the top five in the next year or so.

Smith told ESPN he believes that his time will eventually come soon. "The thing about it is, you have to climb up. If I'm No. 32, by this time next year or the year after, I expect to be in the top 5."

Many NFL fans would raise their eyebrows upon hearing Smith’s pronouncements given his struggles last season. But teammates and coaches say that Smith reported to training camp more confident, and that he has shown a lot of promise in his game during the offseason.

ESPN made the survey, polling 26 coaches and executives to rate the projected starting quarterbacks this year. Smith was right at the bottom of the list.

But Smith was not lacking in confidence, saying: "My first reaction was, 'You know, man, I've got to prove them wrong. In the end, none of that matters. My key job is to make sure this team is improving and I'm doing everything I can for the betterment of this team."

Smith is up against Michael Vick for the team’s starting QB chores, although many team insiders say that he has the upper hand.

His coach, Rex Ryan, had this to say about the survey: “Let's take that survey after the season and see where our quarterback ranks. Let's see where Geno ranks.
