Giants Shut Down David Wilson for 2014 Season: Fantasy Impact; Rashad Jennings Becomes Top-20 RB in Fantasy? [VIDEO]

The New York Giants have shut down starting running back David Wilson for the season after suffering what is being called a career threatening neck injury.

Wilson was returning from spinal fusion surgery in January to repair a disk problem and wasn't cleared for contact until July 21, but was hurt soon after his return when he ran into teammate Eric Herman. Wilson was diagnosed with a burner and his condition has worsened to the point where doctors believe his career is over.

The Giants have expressed interest in having Wilson return to the team if he is healthy, but after being shut down for the season it doesn't look as if the former Virginia Tech star will be able to play again.

The Giants have a platoon of running backs in the stable to pick up the slack and some of them deserve fantasy attention. Wilson was seen as the No. 47 running back in fantasy and he can be removed completely from the equation.

Rashad Jennings (No. 23 RB) benefits the most from Wilson’s absence and instantly becomes a top 20 running back in standard and point per reception (PPR) formats. If you draft Jennings around the end of the fourth round, pick up backup Andre Williams (No. 54 RB) somewhere in Round 12 or 13 as a handcuff as he will also steal some goal line touchdowns from Jennings.

The two running backs ran well in Sunday’s preseason opener in limited action. Williams got seven carries for 48 yards and a touchdown and Jennings got 23 yards rushing and 20 receiving on seven carries and three receptions, respectively.
