The Mets close out a seven-game road trip they are 3-3 on while the Phillies wrap up a seven-game homestand they are currently 4-2 on. New York took the first two games by a 5-4 and 2-1 margin respectively while Philadelphia notched a 7-6 walk-off triumph on Sunday.
The Phillies enter in last place in the National League East, 11 games behind the division-leading Washington Nationals while the Mets sit in fourth place and are eight games back.
Jon Niese (5-8, 3.51 ERA) mans the mound for the Mets while the Phillies counter with rookie David Buchanan, who is 6-5 with a 2.14 ERA.
Niese takes the mound after struggling in his two most recent starts, but he will be looking to bounce back.
"It's easy to talk about the should've-would've-could've when you're struggling," Niese said Wednesday per MLB.com. "I'm at the point now where my stuff's back. My arm feels great. But I'm not very consistent hitting my spots. I've just had a couple bad innings and that's what's cost us."
Philadelphia took Sunday's game after Mets manager Terry Collins opted to walk second baseman Chase Utley intentionally on a full count, leading to first baseman Ryan Howard driving in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth off of closer Jenrry Mejia, who later revealed he is dealing with a hernia.
"Listen, Ryan's been driving in runs for a long time," Utley told the team's website. "He had a knack for driving in runs and big runs. I want him up anytime there are runners on base."
Howard now ranks third in the NL with 72 RBI while outfielder Marlon Byrd is third in the league with 22 homers. Outfielder Ben Revere leads the Phillies with a .308 average and ranks third in the NL with 31 stolen bases. Byrd (137) and Howard (136) also rank second and third respectively in strikeouts in the NL.
Mets first baseman Lucas Duda is tied for fourth in the NL with 21 homers and paces New York with 64 RBI while second baseman Daniel Murphy leads the entire NL with 145 hits, is third in doubles (32, tied) and is first on the team with a .303 batting average.
Two NL East rivals close out their four-game set when the Mets and Phillies take the field this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
