Canelo Alvarez Next Fight: James Kirkland The Frontrunner For December Bout, Possibly In San Antonio [VIDEO]

Canelo Alvarez will return to the ring for the third time in 2014 this December, and a meeting to determine his opponent will happen sometime between the final week of August and early September, according to reports.

"After the meeting], we will know if we're fighting on the 6th of the 20th of December," said Eddie Reynoso, Alvarez's manager. "We will see what is best for us."

Alvarez is 2-0 in 2014 after suffering the first loss of his career to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September 2013. This year he clobbered Alfredo Angulo in March, and then defeated Erislandy Lara by a controversial split decision last month.

The December bout is expected to be held in San Antonio at the Alamodome where he fought Austin Trout, or at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, where he knocked out Alfonso Gomez in 2011.

While no opponent has been named, the frontrunner for this fight is believed to be James Kirkland. He is 32-1-0, with 28 knockouts and was last seen earning a TKO victory over Glen Tapia in Atlantic City in December 2013.

Miguel Cotto has been rumored as a possibility for Alvarez, but that's been tabled until 2015 by both camps. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum prefers to have that fight take place on the weekend of Cinco De Mayo, which will further amp up the rivalry between Mexican and Puerto Rican boxing fans.

"Cotto is a natural fight that people want to see and there will undoubtedly be a lot of talk about this fight because of the rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico," Alvarez said.

Cotto is also scheduled to fight in December at Madison Square Garden. Like Alvarez, his opponent has yet to be announced but there is a clear frontrunner in Andy Lee.
