Cleveland Browns Rumors: Did Johnny Manziel Have a Legitimate Shot at Winning the Browns Quarterback Competition? [VIDEO]

According to former NFL quarterback and Bleacher Report NFL analyst Chris Simms, the Cleveland Browns never gave Manziel a legitimate shot to win the starting job, but did so with his best interests in mind.

Simms cited the structure of the quarterback competition in the preseason and said the tough schedule out the gate forced coach Mike Pettine’s hand. Simms believes that Pettine wants Manziel to a sign of hope for the franchise if the team has a rough start to the season.

The target date for Manziel to start for the Cleveland Browns, in Simms opinion, is Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans. Simms believes that the Browns can pull the trigger on Manziel Week 5 due to Week 4 being the teams bye week and the fact that the Browns will likely be 0-3 or 1-2 as of Week 4.

You can officially start the timer on ‘Manziel Watch’ as it is a matter of when, not if, the former Heisman Trophy winner gets his shot. Manziel (11/2) is the favorite to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award despite not being the starting quarterback.
