Washington Redskins Rumors: RG3 Should Be Benched For Kirk Cousins Based On 2014 Preseason According To Joe Theisman [VIDEO]

Robert Griffin III has generated strong opinions since he entered the NFL, but even with that caveat, Redskins announcer Joe Theismann issued a stinging critique of RGIII's preseason performance.

"Let's stop beating around the bush. Kirk Cousins has played much better at the quarterback position than Robert Griffin III has. Now, Robert is learning to work out of a pocket. He doesn't look as smooth or as comfortable throwing the football. I mean, your eyes will tell you everything you need to know," Theismann said.

"It's going to be a decision that Jay Gruden is going to have to make. Right now, Robert Griffin III is his quarterback. Now, if there was a quarterback competition, it wouldn't be a competition. Kirk Cousins would be the man."

Griffin is currently the unquestioned starter in Washington, but his preseason performance has raised eyebrows for the wrong reasons. In three starts he's thrown two interceptions and zero touchdowns in limited action.

He's been sacked four times, and rushed for just 27 yards despite playing without the knee brace he believes hindered his performance in 2013.

Cousins, meanwhile, has taken more snaps and done far more with them. He has totaled four touchdowns against one interception through three preseason games, broken 100 yards all three times, and been sacked just once.

On Monday Griffin addressed the chatter about his poor preseason showing by saying opinions outside the Redskins locker room are irrelevant.

"We can't worry about what outsiders think," Griffin said. "You can't worry about what doubters or what anyone on the outside says. Everybody in this locker room is all we got and all we need. So what anyone says outside of it doesn't matter to us, doesn't affect us, doesn't affect our approach to the game, doesn't affect us on the practice field or the game field. We're the ones that have to go play so you just block all that stuff out and move forward."
