The 2014 college football season kicks off with two teams looking to get their first taste of Division-I football as Georgia State takes on Abilene Christian.
These two schools get the honor of opening up the 2014 season due to a technicality that had them as the odd man out when it came to the full slate of games at the Georgia Dome this week. No. 18 Mississippi faces Boise State on Thursday night, then No. 2 Alabama meets West Virginia on Saturday so the two teams decided to headline a Wednesday night contest.
This is Georgia State’s first official FBS game and are officially eligible for the Sun Belt Conference championship and bowl invitations. However, they are currently riding a 16-game losing streak and 22 of 23 over the last two seasons.
Abilene Christian has a similar story with more success as they got the bump to Division-I this season after posting eight straight winning seasons. Abilene Christian finished last season 6-5 and hosted one of Division-II’s best offenses as they averaged 45.5 points and 487 yards per game.
Both teams look to get off to a great start to the 2014 season and open up a much more star-studded slate of college football games for the weekend in Atlanta.
