Tonight at 7:08 p.m. ET, the New York Yankees (68-62) and Detroit Tigers (71-59) take the field at Comerica Park for the second contest of a three-game series live from Detroit. New York plays the second contest of a seven-game road trip while Detroit plays the second tilt of a three-game homestand. This series has huge wild-card implications for these teams and the Tigers topped the Yankees 5-2 in the opener of the set on Tuesday to notch their third straight win and snap the Yankees winning streak at five.
Detroit is now a half-game behind the Seattle Mariners for the final wild-card spot in the American League while New York sits 3.5 games back after Tuesday's loss. The Tigers are 1.5 games behind the Kansas City Royals in the AL Central while the Yankees are seven games back of the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East.
Rookie Shane Green (3-1, 3.17 ERA) toes the rubber for New York while Detroit counters with David Price, who is 1-1 with a 2.35 ERA since being traded from the Tampa Bay Rays in July and 12-9 with a 3.00 ERA overall this season.
Price is coming off of a 1-0 loss to his former team and will look to build on a one-hitter that saw him suffer a tough-luck loss.
"You can always build," Price told MLB.com. "You can always get better. I definitely threw well my last start at Tampa, but I can definitely get better."
Greene had an off night last time out as he kept the Yankees in a game against the Chicago White Sox despite not being himself.
"It's one of those nights where he wasn't real sharp," manager Joe Girardi told MLB.com. "But he kept it to three runs and he gave us a chance to win."
Greene faces a Tigers lineup that is led by Victor Martinez. Martinez ranks tied for second in the MLB in batting average (.327), and is in sole possession of third in the league in OPS (.945) and fifth in on-base percentage (.395) and slugging percentage (.550) while leading Detroit with 25 homers.
First baseman Miguel Cabrera ranks second on the MLB with 41 doubles and leads the Tigers with 89 RBI.
The Yankees have been led by Jacoby Ellsbury, who paces the team with a .284 batting average and 60 RBI while ranking second in the AL with 35 homers. First baseman Mark Teixeira leads New York with 20 homers thus far this season.
