Minnesota Vikings Rumors: Vikings Interested in Signing Veteran Champ Bailey? [VIDEO]

The Minnesota Vikings dismantled the St. Louis Rams 34-6 in their season opener, but that doesn't mean improvements can’t be made. Could the Vikings be interested in veteran cornerback Champ Bailey in the coming weeks?

According to Vikings.com, Minnesota could very well pursue the veteran cornerback in the near future, but will look at the development of the six corners they have on the roster before making any type of move.

“There’s certainly a chance the Vikings could reach out to a veteran free agent to add talent to a position. The Vikings did it just a few weeks ago when they signed Chris Crocker to help at safety. My sense at cornerback, though, is the Vikings will go with the six guys they currently have on the roster. It might make more sense to give those young guys, along with Shaun Prater and Marcus Sherels, the reps to see if they can develop rather than signing a veteran whose better days are behind him.”

Bailey was recently cut from the New Orleans Saints after signing a relatively big contact that also paid him a solid signing bonus. The feel around the league is that Bailey’s best days are far behind him and signing him, even for the veteran minimum, would yield very little to the franchise.

The Vikings have free agent acquisition Captain Munnerlyn and second-year first-round pick Xavier Rhodes as their starters at the moment and through one game they have looked the part of starting-caliber. If the Vikings are going to go out and grab a veteran corner for the long haul, it will come in a mentor type role for the young group of players.

Champ Bailey is a 12-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro and spent the last 10 seasons with the Denver Broncos. Bailey was traded from the Washington Redskins for Clinton Portis in 2004.
