Penn State and Rutgers open up their Big Ten schedules against one another as they vie for the top spot in the conference through three weeks.
Penn State will look to add to the Rutgers pass defense woes as they will rely on record-setting quarterback Christian Hackenberg to throw all over the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers has surrendered 700 yards through the air in two games against Washington State and Howard, neither of which have a quarterback that comes close to Hackenberg.
Rutgers will look to control the clock with their workhorse running back Paul James and use the running game to establish better situations for Gary Nova at quarterback. The Scarlet Knights will have to win the battle in the trenches in order to come away with a victory and knocking the Penn State offense out of it’s rhythm will be key.
This is Rutgers’ Big Ten debut and is being called the biggest game in program history. Penn State leads the all-time series with Rutgers 22-2 and the two teams have not played since 1995. Rutgers’ two victories came in 1988 and 1918.
