Montreal Canadiens Rumors: Habs Opt To Not Name Captain, Assign Four Alternates Instead [VIDEO]

One of the questions heading into training camp for the Montreal Canadiens was who would don the 'C' as the team's captain, and the organization revealed on Monday that it has delegated four alternate captains for 2014-15 rather than giving one person the captain's crest.

Preview And Predictions For NHL's Metropolitan Division In 2014-15

NHL.com reports that forwards Max Pacioretty and Tomas Plekanec and defenseman Andrei Markov and P.K. Subban will all sport the 'A' on their chest this season as alternate captains for the team.

This marks just the second time the team will be entering a season without a captain in its history as they did the same in 2009-10. The vacancy comes in the wake Brian Gionta signing with the Buffalo Sabres after serving four years as the Canadiens' captain.

Pacioretty, 25, is coming off of a season where he led the NHL with 11 game-winning goals and put up career-highs in goals (39) and points (team-best 60) while adding 21 assists.

Plekanec, 31, reached the 20-goal plateau for the sixth time in the past eight seasons last year and is entering his 11th season with Montreal. Plekanec ranked second on the team with 20 tallies in the 2013-14 campaign and fourth with 23 helpers and 43 points.

Markov, 35, has played 10 seasons in the NHL -- all with the Canadiens -- and his 442 points rank fourth on the team's all-time list. Markov went 7-36--43 last season for Montreal.

Subban, 25, was rewarded with an eight-year $72 million contract this offseason after he led the Canadiens with 43 assists and found the back of the net 10 times for 53 points last season. Subban also led Montreal with 14 points in the postseason while tying for the team lead with nine helpers and adding five markers.

The Canadiens finished 46-28-8 (100 points) in 2013-14 and were in third place in the Atlantic Division. Montreal swept the Tampa Bay Lightning out of the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and went on to beat the Boston Bruins in seven games before falling to the New York Rangers in six in the Eastern Conference Finals.
