Miguel Cotto Next Fight: Bob Arum Says Canelo Alvarez Talks Are Underway For Cinco De Mayo [VIDEO]

WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto has been called out by WBA and IBO middleweight Gennady "GGG" Golovkin for a unification bout, but Cotto appears headed in another direction.

According to Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, talks are underway to make a Canelo Alvarez fight happen, with Golovkin potentially in line for the victor. "That's what we're trying to do. Have Cotto and Canelo fight, and Gennady is right there, probably could fight the winner," Arum said.

"They're ongoing. I know Todd (duBoef) is here in town, he's talking to Oscar. I think Cotto's in town. So, you know, it's taking place."

Alvarez was slated to return to HBO on December 6 against Joshua Clottey in his first non-pay-per-view fight of 2014, but he pulled out of the bout because of a pre-existing ankle injury. This year Alvarez defeated Alfredo Angulo by TKO, then earned a controversial split decision victory over Erislandy Lara.

Cotto entered the Alvarez picture by upsetting then-WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez in June. Cotto stunned the Madison Square Garden crowd by knocking Martinez down three times in the first round, en route to a stoppage victory in Round 10.

Golovkin is among boxing's rising stars, but has found a major fight difficult to come by. He has called out Cotto, had a fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fall apart, and been ignored by other name fighters like "Kid Chocolate" Peter Quillin.

Still he has slowly increased his exposure by staying active, albeit against lesser opposition. The Rubio fight was Golovkin's third of the year, and second straight knockout coming in the third round or earlier. His latest victory ran his consecutive knockouts streak to 18.
