Tennessee Titans Rumors: Numerous Veteran Players on Trading Block; Teams Calling About Washington, Griffin? [VIDEO]

The Tennessee Titans made their first trade of the season by dealing linebacker Akeem Ayers to the New England Patriots, but the move could be the beginning of a fire sale in Nashville.

According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, the Titans are fielding phone calls for a series of veterans on their roster that includes wide receiver Nate Washington.

Patriots, Buccaneers Discussing Trade for Vincent Jackson?

“NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday on NFL Total Access that teams have been calling the Titans about the wide receiver, who recently lost his starting job in Tennessee to Justin Hunter. Washington, 31, is in the final year of a six-year, $26.8 million contract signed in March 2009. He's making $4.8 million this season.

Rapoport has heard the Titans could be looking to part ways with some of their other high-paid veterans as well. On Thursday, he revealed that in addition to Washington, teams are looking at linebacker Wesley Woodyard and safety Michael Griffin.”

The Titans could get a solid haul of late-round draft picks for the likes of Nate Washington, Wesley Woodyard and Michael Griffin and that could be the best move for a Titan team that is no shape to compete now.  At 2-5 the Titans likely aren’t going to the playoffs, so the issue now becomes: who do you trade and who do you see in this team’s long-term future?

The 29-year-old Griffin has the most value of the rumored and safety is a position that many teams could use an upgrade at. Griffin hasn't have the best season but if he were to be traded, he could find success in a new city.

The Titans plan on starting rookie sixth-round pick Zach Mettenberger this weekend and his success, or lack thereof, could determine what the Titans do before Tuesday’s trade deadline.
