Liverpool FC has confirmed that Red's captain Steven Gerrard will undergo shoulder surgery this week that will rule him out of the last two games of the season.
The 32-year-old, who played 52 games for Liverpool this season in all competitions, will miss the last two remaining games of the English Premier League and as well as England's friendlies against Ireland at Wembley on May 29th and away to Brazil on June 2nd.
"The captain's injury has progressively worsened in recent weeks and requires an operation to cure it," Liverpool said in a statement on their website.
Liverpool officials say he will be fit for preseason training ahead of the new campaign.
The midfielder, who is due to have a testimonial match against Greek champions Olympiakos at Anfield on Aug. 3, has scored nine league goals this season.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers had denied in late April that any such plans were in place, despite coach Mike-Marsh voicing his opinion that surgery would be necessary.
The Red's will finish the season without two of their best players, Gerrard and Luis Suarez, who is out on a 10 game ban for the biting incident with ivanovic.
Liverpool sit in 7th place of the league table and if the results go in their favor will finish in 6th place best.
