While former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez sits in jail awaiting trial for the murder of former associate Odin Lloyd, his lawyers are due in court today regarding a 2012 double homicide.
Hernandez's murder trial for the death of Lloyd is slated to begin in January 2015, but after that's resolved, regardless of the outcome, he will have to face murder charges in the 2012 killing of two men after an altercation in a Boston nightclub.
Two men, Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu reportedly got into an argument with Hernandez over a spilled drink. Hernandez allegedly left the club and waited for the two men to leave, then pulled up alongside their vehicle while they waited at a red light. Hernandez is then accused of shooting the two men and driving away.
Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to both the Lloyd charges as well as the double murder. The meeting today is about evidence sharing between Hernandez's lawyers and the prosecutors. Hernandez himself isn't expected to be in attendance-per the Boston Herald he's waived his right to be present for the last two hearings. The double murder trial is set to begin in May 2015.
While in prison, Hernandez has reportedly been a "model citizen" since leaving the Bristol County facilities and being transferred to Nashua Street Jail In fact, he's even been allowed to watch his former team play on Sundays.
"He's doing fine," Suffolk Sheriff Steven Tompkins told The Boston Herald. "No problems, no complaints, so I think everything's working out right. He can probably watch the Patriots games."
