Los Angeles Lakers News: Franchise Awarded Disability Exception For Steve Nash Amid NBA Team's Struggles

The 2014-15 NBA season is not going as good as the Los Angeles Lakers ad anticipated. After losing guard Steve Nash for the NBA season, it appeared that the Lakers would be stuck as a bottom-tier team paying way too much for a player that almost certainly has played his last NBA game.

Instead, according to LA Times, Los Angeles found out on Tuesday that they were awarded a disabled player exception for Nash that will pay them $4.85 million. The respective exception allows them the extra money to sign Nash's replacement on the roster. The team can also trade for or receive a player and any player received up to $4.95 million.

The Lakers applied for the disabled player exception almost as soon as Nash was injured and ruled out for the 2014-15 NBA season. After reviewing Nash's medical records and confirming his condition, the NBA decided to grant the Lakers the exception for half of what Nash is owed this season.

If the Lakers decide to trade Nash's expiring contract prior to using the exception, then the it would expire and cannot be used. However, if they use the exception to sign a player or claim a player off of waivers, then they can trade Nash's expiring contract without penalty.
