New York Yankees Rumors: Cleveland Indians Out On Chase Headley

The New York Yankees are interested in re-signing free agent third baseman Chase Headley, but could be priced out by other teams showing a desire to pick him up. The Yanks got some relief this week, however, after reports surfaced that the Cleveland Indians won't be part of the bidding.

According to The Cleveland Plain-Dealer the Indians, like the Yankees, are expected to sit out the chase for some of the bigger stars on the market. The Plain-Dealer linked the Tribe to names like Kendrys Morales and Chris Denorfia, who will command less than Headley's reported price of four years and $56-60 million.

Yankees Won't Be In Bidding War For Headley

The Yankees have expressed a desire to keep Headley in the Bronx, but it was reported in The New York Daily News that they wouldn't overpay or be involved in a bidding war for him.

"The Yankees like him and want him back, but they don't consider him a must-have," a source close to the team said. "If they have to go with (Martin) Prado at third, they're not afraid to do that."

Headley's numbers are not eye-popping. He slashed .262/.371/.398 in 58 games for the Yankees with six home runs and 17 RBI. His true value was with the glove, where Fangraphs.com indicates he was worth 21.3 runs last season with both the Padres and Yankees.

Headley's defense is a big plus, especially for a Yankees team that projects to struggle in the power department offensively, but he could be a risky signing if big money is involved.

Headley hit .289 in 2012 with 31 home runs and 115 RBI, but hasn't approached those numbers since. In the two seasons, and 276 games that followed, Headley hit a combined .246 with 26 home runs and 99 RBI.
