While the boxing world awaits news on whether Floyd Mayweather Jr. will finally fight Manny Pacquiao, hardcore fans are also patiently waiting for 140-pound king Danny "Swift" Garcia's next move.
No. 1 contender Viktor Postol stepped aside so Garcia could face an opponent with a bigger name his next time out, but that happened in October and there's been no movement since then. The logical candidate for Garcia's next bout appears to be IBF junior welterweight champion Lamont Peterson, since the two dominated in their previous bouts on the same card at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Peterson's trainer Barry Hunter isn't so confident that a unification fight is happening though.
"Again we've always been hopeful about that fight but we're not sure," Hunter said. I hear the rumors about Danny moving up to '47 [welterweight] and I know a lot of people are moving up, moving down in weight. So I'm not sure."
Hunter's comments about fighters moving up and down could be a reference to Manny Pacquiao's potential move down to junior welterweight. Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach said his most recent fight, a successful title defense vs. Chris Algieri, was fought at a 144-pound catch weight to test Pacquiao's viability at a lower weight.
Pacquiao passed the test with flying colors, knocking down Algieri six times en route to a near-shutout unanimous decision.
Peterson currently has no plans to change weight classes, according to Hunter.
"As it stands now, 140 yes. But I guess in the next one or two fights it depends on if there are no other names at '40, or if Lamont starts to struggle with weight, then we'll have to plan on moving. But I definitely think that's something he wants to do because the names are at 147."
