Tonight at 9:00 p.m. ET on Showtime Amir Khan (29-3-0, 19 KO) will take on Devon Alexander (26-2-0, 14 KO) as headliners of a quadruple-header featuring a number of up-and-coming future stars. Live stream the entire fight card by clicking this link.
Khan has his sights set on a major fight against either Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao in 2015, but in order to do that he must get past Alexander, a slick fighter capable of making opponents look bad.
While Khan has much more star power than Alexander, the latter is confident in how his own skills match up against the favorite's. "Khan's style is perfect for me," Alexander told Sky Sports News. "I'm going to be able to do whatever I want to do whenever I want to do it in the ring.
"He's a good fighter, but I just don't see anything special that Amir Khan does. From me you're going to see versatility, power, speed, movement - all of it. I'm going to be ready. I'm excited."
Khan thinks he will be able to overpower Alexander though. This fight will be the second of Khan's career at welterweight; in his first bout at 147 pounds he handled a rough fighter in Luis Collazo while taking a number of punches flush. His much-maligned chin held up vs. Collazo, and Alexander isn't regarded as a big puncher.
"There's going to come a time in the fight when I'll put pressure on him and rough him up a bit," Khan said. "I know he doesn't like that. We've been working with a lot of sparring partners where I've had to go in and go for the body. I don't think he likes body shots either."
Prediction: Khan def. Alexander by unanimous decision.
Undercard
Keith Thurman (23-0-0, 21 KO) vs. Leonard Bundu (31-0-2, 11 KO)
Thurman hasn't fought since an April knockout of Julio Diaz because of a shoulder injury, but he should be able to walk through the veteran Bundu. Thurman possesses incredible knockout power, and this fight is designed to showcase him for fights at the next level against big-name welterweights. Thurman def. Bundu by TKO (Round 5)
Abner Mares (27-1-1, 14 KO) vs. Jose Ramirez (25-4-0, 15 KO)
Mares bounced back nicely from a shocking KO loss in Round 1 of a 2013 fight vs. Jhonny Gonzalez by dominating Jonathan Oquendo. Ramirez is a solid journeyman who was crushed by Vasyl Lomachenko in a fight in which he was able to step up his competition. Expect more of the same tonight. Mares def. Ramirez by TKO (Round 8)
Jermall Charlo (24-0-0, 11 KO) vs. Lenny Bottai (22-2-0, 9 KO)
Charlo is one of boxing's top prospects, and although Bottai has promised to "do whatever it takes" to make a name for himself and knock off Charlo, he will be facing an uphill battle. Charlo is very skilled and should cruise to victory. Charlo def. Bottai by unanimous decision.
